Erik Jones and his brother came to us from Sonoma Animal Shelter hence they are known as our racing boys.  The shelter told us they were about 10 months old however we think they were a lot younger because they have both grown a lot almost doubling in size.

Erik is a tall, handsome boy that loves to meet new people and new dogs. is learning his manners along with basic obedience.  It looks like they were just backyard dogs, with no training or guidance on how to be a good dog.  In the short time he has been in his foster home he has greatly improved.  With any dog especially German Shepherds continued training, walks and attention are a must.

FOSTER UPDATES:  Erik has gone with us to several of our 5-yr-old granddaughter’s soccer games. Lots of people around, especially little kids, and other dogs too, and he handled it like the champ he is. All the kids Running around on the fields chasing the soccer ball and he just sat there next to me, cool as a cucumber.

Then we had three of our young grandkids stay with us all weekend.  We let him relax away from them the first day to get use to them in the house. On the second day we let him around them more and he was amazing! My biggest concern was him chasing them if they moved too quickly, knocking them over because of his size, or possibly being mouthy with their hands. There were a few times we could tell he thought about “playing” with them, but he’d settle down when we corrected him (Erik, leave it!) I was really impressed. Because of his size we would reccomend older children, but he can handle being around kiddos just fine with supervision.
We have found him to be a little mouthy with us, just trying to get us to play when he feels ignored. Telling him “No!” hasn’t worked for us in that situation. It’s like he thinks we are trying to play with him, and almost gets him more excited. But I’ve started saying “Ouch” and acting like he’s hurt me and he will Stop and look at me and redirect his attention to something else (usually Gunner our dog, lol!!). So happy to have found that works for him. It kinda makes sense, as he and Gunner spend lots of time chasing, wrestling and chewing on each other. And he responds to me when I “Yelp” by stopping.
He rides in the car like a champ - I think he’s just so happy we are taking him with us. He’s really settling down nicely. The only time his puppiness is a problem is I get busy for too long and he feels ignored. That’s when he will go pull a pillow off the couch or (sigh) chew up one of my favorite tennis shoes.
