Daxx is a loveable, affectionate, and playful 18 month old Sable male German shepherd who obviously didn’t have the best start in life.  We don’t know whether he was a stray or an owner surrender but he initially wound up in the Stockton shelter.  While there he was being treated for a moderate case of demodex.  As luck would have it, Daxx was adopted by a family but sadly his demodex was not properly treated so he ended up with a severe case, which has caused him to lose some of his hair and a bad skin infection.   After eight months being in a home the family decided they could no longer keep him due to the daughter’s sudden “allergy” to him so he was dumped at the Manteca shelter.  Although he was immediately placed up for adoption he was also in danger of being euthanized.  Golden State received the call about Daxx’s dire situation, evaluated him, and felt he was a great candidate for rescue. We felt Daxx deserved a second chance at a better life.

Dax has been in a foster home for one week and so far he has done tremendously well.  He is crate trained and appears to be housebroken.  He rides well in a car and has had some leash training.  He knows some basic commands such as “sit” and “stay” and shows no guarding behaviors with food or toys.  Daxx is also very comfortable with people of all ages and is also a very fast learner.

In addition to the above qualities, Daxx has a precocious personality.  He is very inquisitive and investigative, not shying away from “strange” inanimate objects.

The one behavior his foster mom is working on is Daxx’s initial introduction to new dogs.  Daxx can be a little "on guard" at first due to his uncertainty with new dogs but once he knows he's not going to get hurt or attacked he relaxes.   Based on this behavior, his foster mom believes Daxx didn’t have much socialization or interaction with other dogs on a regular basis so his doggie manners are a bit immature.  For this reason Daxx would do best in a home with an older, mature dog that he can learn doggie manners from.

Although Daxx would be fine with a “couch potato” lifestyle, he would enjoy an active person who likes doing fun outdoor activities such as walking, hiking, jogging, or even high level obedience training, agility, or Rally-O.  But with all dogs, especially German shepherds, Daxx would flourish with someone who can and will provide consistent routine and rules as part of his lifestyle.

Daxx will be available for adoption as soon as his demodex and skin infection is thoroughly and completely treated.
