“All that and a bag of chips; one with ‘ridges’ around the edges”. That’s how one of Xena’s evaluators described this beautiful five year old female German shepherd. Kind, friendly, happy, and eager to please describes Xena’s personality.

Xena was surrendered to the Tracy shelter after her owner moved into another home and could no longer keep her. Although she was in the shelter for over two weeks, Xena did very well. She passed all the shelter's temperament tests and knows some basic commands (“sit”, “down”, and is learning to “stay”). She also knows how to “shake hands”. She was comfortable riding in a crate and appears to be a solid traveling companion.

Her owner indicated Xena was an outside dog and although she appears to have very little worldly experience outside the confines of a backyard, Xena has been extremely animated and curious of the “new” world being introduced to her. She also appears to be potty trained. The shelter staff reported that “Xena never messed her kennel. She would hold it until she was let outside”. However, accidents can and do happen so in her new home supervision, diligence, and patience should always be exhibited.

Xena appears comfortable around dogs she meets. In the shelter she was very respectful with all the dogs she “met” and did very well with the dog-on-dog evaluation. She and the test dog respected each other’s space.

Xena is a typical German shepherd, intelligent and smart and would do best in a home with an engaged, experienced, decisive owner who can and will continue to teach her house manners and boundaries. She tends to be a bit over-exuberant on a leash but her foster mom is teaching her to walk nicely without pulling and reports that Xena is a fast learner!

Xena has energy to burn so if you love to hike, are thinking of embarking on a new walking program, or would love the company of an excellent running partner; Xena would be a wonderful companion and addition to your lifestyle.
