Golden State received a plea from Jeff, a volunteer at Berkeley Animal Care Services (the city of Berkeley shelter) about a very nice five-year-old Shepherd / Husky mix named Kahlua who is in danger of being euthanized due to shelter overcrowding.

Shelters can be very stressful for any dog, so Kahlua barks when in his kennel, which prompted Jeff to foster Kahlua overnight. He is calm when outside of his kennel and settles down well in the apartment.

Kahlua was an owner surrender.  For his entire life, he had a woman owner who recently surrendered him to Berkeley Animal Care Services, due to personal reasons (no fault of the dog).

Jeff takes Kahlua back to the shelter during the day.  They walk about 3 miles each way.  He likes to go walking and jogging.  Often he pulls some, but usually not very hard unless he is excited by something.  He pulls towards squirrels and when approaching a destination he wants to go to (such as my apartment, or towards a favorite jogging route).

Kahula is good with people, he meets new people calmly.  According to the notes provided by the previous owner, Kahula seems to be good with children, except he might be kind of nervous.

He has been indifferent with other dogs he was introduced to at the shelter.  He seems to bond more to people than dogs.  He is usually not dog reactive when walking unless the other dog is reacting, in which case he may react too.   Jeff doesn't know how he is with cats.

For more information or to meet Kahlua, please contact Jeff directly at jeff@teeters.us or the Berkeley Animal Care Services animalservices@berkeleyca.gov or 510.981.6600
