Male 6.5 years

Rufus is a 6 1/2-year-old, 92-lb, purebred, neutered GSD male. He carries the recessive white gene, resulting in the cute white markings on his head! He is well trained (common commands in German) but also can be stubborn and needs a dominant human to remind him who’s boss. He has had rough luck with finding a forever home, with somewhat of a convoluted story. He has had at least three homes - through no fault of his own. He was in GSD rescue at 18 months (for unknown reason). He then lived with his first known adopter for two-plus years, until the woman died in a car accident. My friend adopted him then and has had him since - for a little over two years. Rufus is sadly being rehomed again due to serious illness of the owner.

A transition may be difficult initially for this boy. He is very bonded to his current owner, an adult man who has taken Rufus to work with him (in an office environment) almost every day for the past two years. He enjoys being close to his owner, and displays some protective behavior but is not an "attack" dog. He can be mouthy and nippy at times - mostly to get what he wants. But he is also very eager to please, and very responsive to training. As he has bonded with both an adult woman and later to an adult man, he would probably do well with either sex as his primary caregiver. My friend says he seems to favor women when meeting new people, but warms up to all once he deems them trustworthy.

Rufus has been around kids and seems tolerant and steady, but because of his size and tendency to be mouthy at times would probably be best with teens and above. His first known home also had a boy who was 10-12 years of age during Rufus' two years with that family.

Rufus is a beautiful boy, bonds strongly and deserves a wonderful forever home. He would be a great running and/or hiking companion for an athletic individual, but equally at home with maybe a retired person/s who were able to spend a lot of time with him and not leave him alone for extended periods. However, he is quite strong, physically and mentally - and therefore would do best with a similar human. He does tend to pull on the leash a lot though I believe that could be stopped altogether with just a little work.

Also, Rufus has been around various dogs but not lived with another dog - at least not to my knowledge. He acts assertive with meeting new dogs, particularly males. He definitely wants to be top dog! But he tolerates females better, as well as small dogs. He has been around my adult female Ridgeback, and ignored her after the initial "look at me and how tough I am" introduction. Again, he would probably be quite sound with a little additional work.

Rufus would also do well in a "working" environment, as he enjoys mental stimulation. He may enjoy scent work, search and rescue or additional obedience training, either formally or otherwise.

If you know of anyone with GSD experience who would like to meet Rufus, please please contact me!!
