Male 3 years
Burger is a 2-4 year-old, 75-80 pound male German shepherd who we have had since November 2020. He was found by some friends in Oakland roaming a dog park, skinny and dirty. We took him in hoping we could teach him some manners and make him part of our family. Burger is a true shepherd in his obedience and loyalty. He is a fast learner, and bonds hard with his people. He still has poor leash manners, and he does not get along with cats, which is why we have to re-home him. We think he would do best with a family that has time and probably prior experience with training a shepherd, and also the ability to socialize him. He barks and pulls on the leash when he sees other dogs, though he has been friendly with them when he does meet them.
He lived for the first several weeks with our friends who found him, who have a 4-year-old child and a 9-year-old pit bull. He may do well with children and other dogs, but we would recommend older children who are respectful. He is crated during the day at our home, and while he stays fairly quiet, he does still tear up whatever mats are left in the crate. He is otherwise calm in the house when we are here and calm. He follows us from room to room when we are doing chores. He sleeps quietly and well through the day and at night as long as we are nearby. He enjoys his walks, and he loves playing in the yard with balls. Any squeaky toy is great for him; he is very good about not chewing shoes or furniture, he sticks to his toys.
Burger was malnourished and had several sores on him when he was found. Most have healed well, but he still has a chronic ulcer on one elbow that the vet said may never fully heal. He was recently neutered (Feb. 2021) and had his rear dewclaws removed. He also is a crate escape artist; we had to buy a heavy-duty crate to be able to contain him. Because of the money we spent getting him healthy, and because whoever takes him would be offered his crate, bed, remaining doses of flea and heartworm medication, etc, we are asking for the $300 adoption fee for Burger.
