Senior, Special needs (Health)
**Currently in a foster to adopt home**
Meet sweet solid senior, Ren! Ren came to us with undiagnosed stage 4 heartworm disease, which permanently weakened his heart, but not his spirit or his gentle demeanor. He was severely malnourished; all ribs and hip bones visible through the skin; was lethargic, and walked around with constant sadness. With a patient foster, love, and many treatments later, this handsome senior is ready to find his forever home. Due to Covid shelter in place constraints, Ren received alternative treatment protocol and responded extremely well; finally being able to gain weight and energy and begin to engage again with the world. Ren was able to gain back the 25 to 30 pounds lost as a result of the heartworm.
We opted not to put Ren through the extremely long and possibly painful arsenic-based kill treatment as he is progressing so well and didn’t want to impact his quality of life. While his heartworm is no longer contagious, we feel Ren would be happiest in a home as the only dog as he can be pushy around other dogs and hasn’t been able to engage in continued & proper socialization due to Covid. He isn’t aggressive - but is happy being the big man of the house, and will need an adopter who can allow for proper introductions to other dogs, as he gets excitable on a leash. He really gravitates towards men, but loves his foster mom to pieces!
Ren loves going for walks, interacting with people, and also loves to cuddle. He is calm around new people, children and had visited some rest homes prior to Covid to hang out with folks. Ren has excellent house manners and knows all basic obedience. He is patient, treat motivated and learns quickly. He really enjoys being around his people. With his age and condition he doesn’t need a super active adopter, but one who can take him walking each day. While we know that his heartworm may not be 100% gone, he has made so much progress and is a happy and different dog since we brought him in. His adopters must able to give him his heartworm preventative monthly, and semiannual antibiotic treatments *must* continue on schedule until he tests negative. His adopter must also now that Ren may have some physical limitations brought on by his condition, but that he will make that special someone a great companion. He is ready to share his world.
Adoption Fee includes spay or neuter, vaccinations including rabies, worming, microchip, and a collar.
